Being Kind Counts: Bringing Joy through Flowers

During the month of September, I’ve been taking part in the Being Kind Counts campaign.  The challenge?  To do something kind for someone for 30 days.  Since it’s almost the end of the month, I can go ahead and tell you that we didn’t succeed.  We missed days here and there and missed five in a row while we were on vacation, but the days we’ve done our good deed, it’s been really amazing!

Being Kind Counts Idea

As part of the Being Kind Counts challenge, we've been giving a flower to someone every day this month. What will YOU do? | candleinthenight.com

When I was looking for an idea, I saw a lot of things that involved spending money and several things that I’d have to do without the kids.  I really wanted to involve the girls in our 30 day kindness campaign.  The idea I finally came up with was to give a flower to someone every day.  We have a garden full of flowers, so they’re free, and giving a flower to a friend or stranger was something the girls could easily do.

Following Through with Being Kind Counts

To have an idea is one thing, but to carry it out is completely different.  Our first few flowers were easy.  Grandma, a couple neighbors…  Then we ran out of people we knew.  That meant taking flowers with us to places we were going and giving them to random people.  The nurse at my daughter’s allergist, a neighbor we’d never met, a random person in the store.  Giving to these people was a little out of my comfort zone.  Approaching someone you’ve never met, even to perform an act of kindness, can be intimidating, but the rewards were always worth it.  The smiles, the “you just made my day!”, and the agreement to pass it on was more than enough reward to keep me wanting more.

Why the Being Kind Counts Campaign Works

You see, when you give, it blesses someone else, but it blesses you too.  Your heart is softened and you want to give again and again and again.  It’s just like love.  You don’t run out.  The  more you give, the more you have to give.

The Being Kind Counts Challenge

So here it is.  My challenge to you.  Pick one thing to do in the next week.  Just one!  Follow through, perform your act of kindness, and pass on the challenge to someone else.  Here are some great things you can do for FREE and here is a list of 30 MORE ideas!
